Lagos State ready to train Artisan and Craftsmen

Lagos State is taking strategic measures to bridge skill gaps within the housing sector by introducing an extensive training initiative aimed at enhancing the abilities of artisans and craftsmen in the industry. This initiative, named the "Master Craftsman Training Programme," is scheduled to commence on August 19, 2023, in the Alimosho and Ikorodu Local Government Areas.

The program is tailored to empower residents, particularly young individuals engaged in construction trades, by upgrading their skills and providing them with additional competencies to boost employability and enhance their economic prospects. Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, explained that the intensive six-week training will occur on weekends and will focus on key construction trades including Electrical Installation and Maintenance Works, Painting and Decorating, Plumbing and Pipe-Fitting, Carpentry and Furniture Making, and Masonry (Block laying and Concreting).

In addition to core construction skills, the training will cover related areas like Customer Relations, Information and Communication Technology, and Health and Safety. Leading experts in the field will conduct the training, ensuring participants are trained according to the latest industry trends. The training centers are located in Ikotun, Alimosho LGA, and Ikorodu, Ikorodu LGA.

Eligibility for the training requires residents to be above 18 years of age and possess evidence of registration with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA). Prospective participants should also have a foundational background in the relevant skills, either through technical colleges or informal apprenticeships.

The selection process for the training is based on a first-come, first-served basis. Application forms can be acquired from the office of the Director of Administration and Human Resources at the Ministry of Housing, Lagos State. Successful participants who attend the program with over 70% attendance will receive certification from a recognized professional institute. Additionally, the State Government will provide certified master craftsmen with modern tools of their trade, work gear, and stipends to support their empowerment.

Participants are advised by Olowoshago to be prepared for comprehensive practical and theoretical sessions during the training. Importantly, trainees will be fully insured throughout the program to ensure protection against potential hazards or risks during practical training sessions.
