Empathy in Action: Leaders Unite to Tackle Devastation in Flood-Hit Communities

 













Earlier Today 25th of October 2023, the Mayoress of Ikosi Isheri LCDA, Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, and Hon. Femi Saheed, a Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Kosofe Constituency II, embarked on an official visit to communities affected by the recurrent flood crisis in some parts of Lagos and ogun state. The purpose of this visit was to express sympathy and assess the extent of damage caused by the perennial flood, primarily due to the excessive release of water from the Oyan River Dam in Ogun state.

The objective of the visit was to: Express solidarity and sympathy to the displaced residents and business owners in the affected communities, to Assess the level of damage caused by the flood to the residents and their properties, and most importantly to Inform the stakeholders and residents about ongoing collaborative efforts between the Federal and State Government, as well as Senate and Assembly members, to find a lasting solution to the flood issue.

The officials visited several flooded areas, including:

• *Agiliti Mile12:* where the Mayoress and Hon. Femi Saheed took a canoe to reach the communities. They witnessed the devastation caused by the flood and spoke with residents who had been displaced from their homes.

• *God First Estate at Owode Ajegunle:** At this location, they met with business owners situated close to the riverbank. Many of them had to shut down their shops as the flood had disrupted their businesses. This visit highlighted the economic impact of the flood on the community.

• *Isheri Community in Isheri North:** This was the second visit to Isheri Community within 72 hours, underscoring the urgency of the situation. The officials assessed the ongoing damage to the residents' properties and conveyed their sympathy.

During the visit, Mayoress Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada assured the affected residents that both the Federal and State Governments were actively working on finding lasting solutions to the recurring flood issue, as attested to by Hon Femi Saheed.  Collaborative efforts with Senate and Assembly members were in progress, aiming to mitigate future flood crises.

Stakeholders from the affected communities were present during the visit. The elected officers discussed the challenges faced by the residents and sought their input on potential solutions. This dialogue aimed to ensure that the community's concerns and perspectives were heard and considered in the decision-making process.

The visit demonstrated the commitment to addressing the recurring flood crisis in the region. Their expressions of sympathy, assessment of the damage, and assurance of government support are steps towards finding lasting solutions and providing relief to the affected communities.
