Advancing Sustainable Development: Mayoress Bada Flag-off HPV Vaccination Program in Ikosi Isheri LCDA

This was the reason why the Mayoress of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, took a remarkable step by flagging off the HPV vaccination program as part of the routine immunization campaign today.

During the flag-off of the program, the Mayoress referred to the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey report, which revealed that 19 percent of women in the country initiate sexual intercourse as early as age 15, significantly increasing the risk of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This revelation underscores the urgent need for intervention. The introduction of an HPV vaccination program targeted at young girls in Nigeria holds the potential to prevent a staggering 71,000 deaths annually if it successfully reaches the intended age group.

During her speech at the event, the Mayoress emphasized the critical importance of the HPV vaccination program for the health and well-being of the community, particularly its young female residents. She further explained that HPV is a pervasive virus that can lead to severe health complications, including cervical cancer. By launching this vaccination campaign, the local government is taking proactive measures to shield its residents from the potential harms of HPV.

The primary objective of the program is to ensure that all eligible young girls in the community receive the HPV vaccine, emphasizing the significance of prevention in safeguarding the health of future generations and reducing the incidence of cervical cancer. She expressed her gratitude to the dedicated healthcare professionals responsible for administering the vaccines and acknowledged the invaluable contributions of their partners, including Health District II, Lagos State Healthcare Board, NPNCDA, WHO, UNICEF, and others, in making this life-saving program a reality.

She, therefore, appeals to parents and guardians, urging them to support the initiative and ensure that their daughters receive the HPV vaccine. This straightforward yet powerful action can effectively protect the health and secure the future of these young girls, ensuring that they are shielded from the threat of HPV-related health issues.

"The Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Dr. Owoyele, and Health Educator Mrs. Afolabi of the health department of Ikosi Isheri LCDA were also present at the flag-off event. They emphasized the immense importance of this initiative in curbing cervical cancer and protecting the health of young girls. According to her, the vaccine offers ten years of long-term protection, making it a potent tool in preventing this life-threatening disease. The program's approach of bringing the vaccine directly to the doorsteps of eligible girls ensures accessibility and equitable distribution, leaving no one behind in the fight against HPV.
